Gopherweed – Florida Wildflowers Wednesday

It’s Florida Wildflower’s Wednesday and we love wildflowers! The flower of the week is the Gopherweed. This flower is a native perennial, also known as Baptisia lanceolata (botanical name). A bushy plant belonging to the pea and bean family (Fabaceae). This wildflower reaches a height of 36 inches with bright yellow, pea-like flowers in groups of three. The flowers commonly remain on the top of the plant and do not bloom near the ground. According to the experts, we find this bush blooming bright yellow flowers within forests and along sandy hills in the spring. Further, this simple wildflower creates black pods with beak-like characteristics against the gray-green long leaves. The Gopherweed commonly pops up in the central and northern regions of Florida.

Wildflower Craft Activity

Looking for a unique activity that involves the outdoors and wildflowers? Take a nature hike, bring a wildflower guidebook, and collect flowers from the different plants that surround you. Flowers can be trimmed, pressed and dried between the pages of a book for crafting projects later. Dried flowers and leaves can be used in drawings, shading projects, candles, soaps, paintings, and even resin! Or grab a simple mason jar and add the dry flowers or buds for a unique decorative piece with a rustic and elegant feel.

Fact! This beautiful wildflower is quick to fill the land after a forest fire. Bringing life back and showcasing the resiliency of nature itself.
